The Khardung La Challenge: Conquering the World's Highest Ultra-Marathon

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

India boasts a variety of stunning landscapes, from tranquil beaches to towering peaks. Yet, one extraordinary challenge stands out above the rest — the Khardung La Challenge, renowned as one of the globe’s most formidable ultra-marathons. This event tests not just physical endurance but also mental strength, guiding runners into the thin air and chilling temperatures of high altitudes.

A Unique Marathon Experience

Each year in Ladakh, a region rich in beauty but fierce in nature, athletes participate in the Khardung La Challenge, which spans 72 kilometers and ascends to an astonishing 17,618 feet above sea level. Here, the air holds nearly 50% less oxygen than that at sea level, making every breath laborious and each footfall an exertion of will.

Since its inception in 2012, when just 11 runners took on the course, the event has transformed into a significant global competition. By 2023, participation swelled to nearly 250, featuring some of the most elite athletes worldwide.

Challenging Terrain Awaits

Interest in this unique race surged after a recent feature by National Geographic. Their segment, part of the series 'India From Above,' showcased stunning aerial footage of the Ladakh mountains and the athletes navigating steep gradients, rocky pathways, and icy winds.

The most daunting segment of the competition is the ascent to Khardung La Pass, one of the highest drives on Earth. The relentless climb leaves participants breathless and fatigued, with many facing symptoms like dizziness and exhaustion from the reduced oxygen levels.

Out of the challenging 72 km route, almost 60 km is traversed at elevations surpassing 14,000 feet, where survival becomes a true trial.

Celebrating the Champions of 2025

Throughout its history, the Khardung La Challenge has birthed legends, including Shabbir Hussain, who made headlines by winning the race three consecutive years starting in 2019. In 2025, he reaffirmed his strength in the men's category.

In the women's race, Namgyal Lhamo took first place in 2025, receiving accolades for her resilience in one of the most grueling races on the planet.

Only for the Most Trained Athletes

The organizers make it clear: the Khardung La Challenge is reserved for the most fit and experienced runners. The threats of altitude sickness, dehydration, and unpredictable weather render the competition perilous for beginners.

Extensive training is a must; participants dedicate months not just to distance running, but also to acclimatizing to the thin oxygen levels. Many competitors arrive in Ladakh weeks ahead of time to prepare their bodies for the harsh conditions.

Understanding Khardung La Pass

The Khardung La Pass lies in the Ladakh region, linking Leh with the Nubra and Shyok valleys. Its military significance is well recognized, and it attracts travelers and bikers eager to experience one of the highest roadways on Earth.

Often cloaked in snow and flanked by dramatic mountain ranges, the pass offers vistas that seem straight from a fairytale.

More Than Just a Race: A Life-Changing Journey

The Khardung La Challenge transcends mere competition. For many, it becomes a journey of self-discovery that fosters discipline, resilience, and bravery. The melding of local culture, the rugged beauty of the landscape, and the heartwarming hospitality of the Ladakhi people ensure that this experience remains unforgettable.
