Malaysia Allocates RM10 Million More for Taxi Reform Initiative

Post by : Shakul

In a significant move to support taxi drivers, Malaysia has unveiled an extra RM10 million funding boost for its Vehicle Replacement Matching Grant Programme. This announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the launch of the National Madani Taxi Reform Programme at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.

The Prime Minister noted that the allocation follows encouraging feedback from the initial RM10 million given in Budget 2026. This increase aims to motivate more taxi operators to upgrade their vehicles, enhancing the quality of passenger service.

New Proton S70 Financing Scheme Announced

Additionally, Anwar confirmed a partnership with Proton and the Ministry of Transport to roll out a specialized financing option for taxi drivers interested in acquiring the Proton S70 sedan.

This financing initiative is set to ease vehicle ownership, enabling drivers to gradually swap out older taxis for modern, safer, and fuel-efficient models. Details on the financing plan will be shared once final preparations are in place.

Rationale Behind Increased Funding

The Malaysian government raised the grant program by an additional RM10 million influenced by positive responses from taxi circles. This proactive measure seeks to enhance vehicle replacement, improve service standards, boost road safety, and fortify the sustainability of the nation’s taxi sector.

Understanding the Proton S70 Financing Scheme

The Proton S70 financing offer, developed in conjunction with Proton and the Ministry of Transport, aims to present manageable financing pathways for taxi drivers. The goal is to facilitate the purchase of new Proton S70 vehicles while alleviating financial pressures related to the transition.

Comprehensive Taxi Industry Overhaul on the Horizon

During the event, Anwar pledged the government’s dedication to revitalizing the taxi sector through updated regulations and adapting to technological advancements. He acknowledged the challenges taxi drivers face due to dwindling incomes and stiff competition from emerging transport services.

He stated that bolstering the taxi sector is vital for driver welfare and essential for ensuring dependable public transport across the country.

Review of the Permit System

Anwar also addressed concerns regarding the existing taxi permit system, which has often favored companies or intermediaries over individual drivers, restricting their opportunities for ownership.

The Ministry of Transport is actively reviewing policy options to enhance individual driver ownership while improving the industry’s operational framework.

Positive Industry Outlook

Experts from the transport sector believe that the boosted funding alongside the new financing programme has the potential to expedite the transition from older taxis throughout Malaysia. Upgrading to modern vehicles is expected to cut down operational costs, improve fuel efficiency, elevate passenger safety, and enhance public trust in taxi services.

The government remains committed to collaborating with transport agencies and industry stakeholders to ensure that these reforms yield sustainable advantages for both taxi operators and passengers.
