Neymar brought his international career to an emotional close at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the same venue where he made his senior debut for Brazil in 2010. He had scored on his debut 16 years ago, and in his final appearance for the Seleção, he found the net once again.
Following Brazil's 2-1 defeat to Norway, which ended the team's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, Neymar confirmed that his international journey had come to an end.
Reflecting on the moment, he said: "It started here and I finished here. It is now over."
He also added: "I tried. I tried."
Reaching the World Cup itself was a major achievement for Neymar after a difficult period with injuries.
The Brazilian forward underwent surgery and spent several months away from action with Santos before regaining his form and earning a place in Brazil's World Cup squad. Just weeks before the tournament, another injury put his participation in doubt once again.
Despite those setbacks, Neymar recovered in time to feature in Brazil's final group-stage match against Scotland and later delivered one last memorable moment against Norway.
During stoppage time against Norway, Brazil were already close to elimination when they were awarded a penalty.
Norway goalkeeper Nyland attempted to distract Neymar before the kick, and the two exchanged a few words. However, Neymar remained calm and confidently converted the penalty by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
The goal became the final international goal of Neymar's career. However, it was not enough to change the result, as Norway secured a 2-1 victory after the final whistle, ending Brazil's World Cup campaign.
Although Brazil's tournament ended in disappointment, Neymar achieved another important milestone.
His goal made him only the second Brazilian after Pele to score in four different FIFA World Cup tournaments.
He also joined Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Miroslav Klose, Uwe Seeler, and Ivan Perisic among the small group of players who have scored in at least four separate World Cup editions.
Neymar finishes his international career as Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer with 80 goals for the national team.
During his time with Brazil, he played in four FIFA World Cups and won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013. He also claimed Olympic gold on home soil at Rio 2016, won Olympic silver at London 2012, and finished runner-up in the 2021 Copa América.
Although Neymar was unable to help Brazil continue its World Cup journey or achieve the dream of winning either the FIFA World Cup or the Copa América, his final appearance added another memorable chapter to his international career.
His last goal came at the same stadium where his Brazil journey had started 16 years earlier, creating a symbolic ending to one of the country's most successful international football careers.
