New Zealand Win Test Series After Big Win Over West Indies

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

New Zealand delivered a dominant performance as they defeated West Indies by 323 runs in the third and final Test at Mount Maunganui, completing a 2-0 series victory. The hosts were in full control after gaining a big first-innings lead of 155 runs, leaving the visitors with an almost impossible target of 462 runs to win the match.

Fast bowler Jacob Duffy and spinner Ajaz Patel led the bowling attack with outstanding spells. Duffy took five wickets for just 42 runs, while Patel picked up three wickets for 23 runs. Their combined effort saw West Indies bowled out for only 138 runs in the final session at Bay Oval.

Opener Brandon King offered some resistance with a solid 67 runs and shared an opening partnership of 87 with John Campbell. However, once King was dismissed, the West Indies batting lineup collapsed quickly. Campbell scored 16, which turned out to be the second-highest score, highlighting the visitors’ struggles with the bat.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham played a key role with the bat, scoring 137 in the first innings and following it up with another century in the second. His opening partner Devon Conway had an exceptional match, scoring 227 in the first innings and 100 in the second, earning him the player-of-the-match award. This was the first time in Test cricket that both opening batters from the same team scored centuries in both innings.

Duffy was named player of the series after finishing with 23 wickets across the matches. The convincing win also helped New Zealand move to second place in the World Test Championship standings, just behind Australia.

West Indies captain Roston Chase admitted that it was a difficult series for his team. He said the side played well in short phases but failed to perform consistently at key moments, which ultimately reflected in the results.
