The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in Oman organized a special event titled “Wellness Tourism Forum” to mark World Tourism Day, which is observed every year on 27 September. The 2025 edition of the day follows the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” focusing on responsible tourism and sustainable development in the sector.
Promoting Oman as a Wellness Destination
The forum aimed to highlight Oman’s growing potential in tourism and to strengthen its position as a regional and global destination. It showcased Oman as a place offering unique wellness and recreational experiences that combine relaxation, health, and the preservation of natural resources.
Support from Health Authorities
The forum was held under the patronage of Dr. Ahmed Salem Al Mandhari, the Undersecretary for Health Planning and Regulation at the Ministry of Health. The Ministry emphasized the importance of integrating wellness and health-focused initiatives with tourism to promote holistic experiences for visitors.
Developing Wellness Tourism
Speakers discussed strategies for developing wellness tourism in Oman. Key areas included enhancing the role of spas and health hotels in supporting physical and mental well-being, integrating health clubs and tourism companies, involving SMEs in providing local products for wellness facilities, creating tailored tourism packages, and encouraging the hospitality sector to improve infrastructure and services for wellness tourists.
Wide Participation
The forum witnessed participation from governmental establishments, academic institutions, and private firms. Representatives included the Ministry of Health, Sultan Qaboos University, the German University, Oman Tourism College, and officials from 4- and 5-star hotels and resorts.
Learning from International Experiences
The forum featured visual presentations highlighting successful wellness tourism experiences around the world. Examples included hot springs in Eastern Europe, wellness tourism in Bali, Indonesia, and mountain wellness camping in Oman’s Sujarah Village in Wilayat of Jabal Akhdar, which showcased traditional mountain life practices.
Showcasing Local Initiatives
Several resorts and hotel establishments presented their wellness tourism experiences, demonstrating a variety of services, packages, and well-prepared facilities. These efforts are aimed at attracting visitors seeking relaxation, health, and recreational activities while promoting sustainable tourism practices.
Exhibition on Therapeutic Experiences
Alongside the forum, an exhibition was organized to display therapeutic initiatives and wellness experiences across Oman. This exhibition offered participants the opportunity to learn about different local wellness products and services and encouraged networking among stakeholders in the tourism and wellness sectors.
Future of Wellness Tourism in Oman
The forum concluded with discussions on strengthening Oman’s wellness tourism sector, enhancing infrastructure, and increasing collaboration between public and private sectors. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism emphasized that wellness tourism is a key component of the country’s strategy to promote sustainable tourism and provide high-quality experiences for both residents and international visitors.
