Artificial intelligence is creating new ways to manage waste more efficiently. By improving the accuracy of sorting systems, AI reduces the amount of waste that goes to landfills and increases the volume of materials that can be recycled. This approach supports global sustainability efforts by making recycling faster, smarter, and more effective.
Introduction of Oman’s “Env.ai” System
Oman has taken an important step in this field through the innovation called “Env.ai,” an intelligent waste management system that uses AI technology to sort plastic waste with high precision. The project aims to make recycling easier, cut down on pollution, and encourage citizens to contribute to environmental protection.
How the Smart System Works
The Env.ai system works through smart bins fitted with advanced cameras and AI processors. These cameras analyze waste based on international plastic identification standards and then automatically send each item to the correct bin. This automation helps eliminate sorting mistakes and improves the quality of recycled materials.
Educating Users Through Interactive Screens
In addition to sorting waste, the system also raises awareness. Each smart bin includes an interactive screen that displays short educational messages. These messages explain how recycling benefits the planet and encourage users to properly separate their waste. This user-friendly feature aims to make recycling a part of daily life.
Vision and Development Journey
The Env.ai project was co-founded by Saif Juma Al Hashar, an Information Technology (Cybersecurity) student at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Muscat. He shared that the idea started in early 2025 and has since evolved into a fully functioning prototype. The team has conducted multiple field tests, improving the system’s performance and accuracy.
Supporting Oman Vision 2040
Al Hashar explained that Env.ai aligns with Oman Vision 2040, which prioritizes sustainability and innovation. The country aims to build a cleaner, greener environment by promoting advanced technologies that improve waste management and reduce pollution.
Tackling a Major Environmental Challenge
Plastic waste remains one of the most serious environmental issues. Large amounts of plastic are often mixed with other waste, making manual sorting difficult and inefficient. This leads to more pollution and limits recycling potential. Env.ai directly addresses this problem through automation, making sorting faster, more accurate, and less dependent on human labor.
National and International Recognition
The Env.ai team has already gained recognition for their innovation. They represented Oman at the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF 2025) in the United Kingdom. There, they presented their work to scientists and researchers from across the world. The project received positive feedback and interest for its real-world applications in sustainability.
Achievements in Competitions
The innovation also achieved national success, earning second place in the National Hackathon held in the South A’Sharqiyah Governorate. Competing among more than 60 teams, Env.ai stood out for its creativity, practicality, and environmental focus. These experiences helped the team refine their system and plan for wider implementation.
Future Goals and Expansion
According to Al Hashar, the next step is to expand field trials and develop strategic partnerships with government bodies and recycling organizations. The team’s long-term goal is to produce smart bins on a large scale and integrate them into cities, schools, and public spaces. This will make proper waste management more accessible to everyone.
The success of Env.ai highlights Oman’s commitment to combining technology and sustainability. By using AI to solve waste problems, the project sets a strong example of how innovation can help protect the planet. It also shows how youth-led ideas can bring real change, supporting the broader national vision for a sustainable future.
