Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won the 2025 Intercontinental Cup after a thrilling penalty shootout against Flamengo. The match ended 1-1 after regular and extra time, with Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov saving four penalties to secure a 2-1 shootout victory for PSG at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Qatar.
PSG had a strong 2025, adding the Intercontinental Cup to their collection of Ligue 1, French Cup, Champions League, European Super Cup, and Trophy of Champions. Luis Enrique’s side took the lead in the 38th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored after a counter-attack. Flamengo equalised in the 62nd minute through a penalty by Jorginho after Marquinhos fouled De Arrascaeta in the box.
The first half was open, with PSG thinking they scored through Fabian Ruiz, but VAR ruled the goal out. Flamengo pressed hard and forced several saves from Safonov, while PSG lost Lee Kang-in to a thigh injury. In extra time, both teams had chances, including Dembele and Barcola for PSG, but the match remained tied, leading to the decisive penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Safonov saved four Flamengo penalties from Saul Niguez, Pedro, Leo Pereira, and Luiz Araujo. PSG scored through Vitinha and Nuno Mendes, and despite misses by Dembele and Barcola, the French side lifted the trophy. Midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery praised the team’s effort, saying PSG played well against tough opponents and must stay focused for the rest of the season.
