Qatar is preparing to host the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, bringing the world's biggest international basketball competition to the Middle East for the first time. The tournament will be held in Doha from 27 August to 12 September 2027, marking another major sporting milestone for the country.
The event comes less than five years after Qatar hosted the FIFA World Cup, as the country continues to expand its role in staging major international sporting competitions.
According to FIBA, "One city, 32 teams. The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 in Doha, Qatar, will be the ultimate hoops extravaganza."
The 2027 edition will be historic as Qatar becomes the first Arab nation to host the FIBA Basketball World Cup. It will also be the third consecutive edition hosted in Asia, following the 2023 tournament.
A total of 32 national teams will compete during the championship. Every match will be played across four venues located within approximately 30 minutes of one another, making it one of the most compact tournament formats in the competition's history.
Unlike previous editions that were spread across multiple cities or countries, the entire 2027 tournament will be staged in and around Doha. The single-city format is expected to make travel easier for teams, officials and supporters.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said the arrangement will give fans a special opportunity to attend more games than in recent editions.
"Additionally, to have all 32 participating teams based in one city for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 will present a unique opportunity for fans to customise their World Cup experience by accessing more games in person than in any other FIBA World Cup over the last twenty years. I believe 2027 will be a special experience in Doha for this flagship FIBA event," Zagklis said.
Qatar secured the hosting rights after receiving unanimous approval from FIBA's Central Board during its meeting in Metro Manila in April 2023.
The successful bid focused on accessibility, sustainability and the use of existing sports infrastructure, allowing the tournament to be organised without spreading matches across multiple cities.
The championship will feature 92 games over 17 days.
Lusail Arena, with a capacity of more than 15,000 spectators, will host the semifinals and the final.
Group-stage matches will be played at Al Attiyah Arena and Duhail Arena, both originally built for the 2015 Handball World Championship. Matches will also take place at Al Janoub Stadium, which is set to become the first FIFA World Cup stadium to be converted into a basketball venue.
While Qatar has already secured its place as the host nation, 80 national teams are currently competing for the remaining 31 qualification spots.
Qatar will make its first appearance at the FIBA Basketball World Cup since 2006. If Germany qualifies through the 2027 European Championships, the team will enter the tournament as the defending world champions.
The 32 qualified teams will be divided into eight groups of four teams each. The top two teams from every group will progress to a second group stage before the competition moves into the knockout rounds.
This format will determine the eventual world champion after a total of 92 matches across the 17-day tournament.
Qatar's hosting model is expected to give spectators the opportunity to watch multiple matches on the same day, with all venues connected through the Doha Metro.
The previous FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2023 was jointly hosted by the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. In contrast, the 2027 edition will be held entirely in Doha, highlighting a different approach to organising the global tournament.
The event also adds to Qatar's growing list of major international sporting competitions as the country builds on the legacy of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and prepares to host the 2030 Asian Games.
