Qatari Citizen Killed, Resident Injured After Boat Hit by Shrapnel During Regional Military Operations

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A Qatari citizen was killed and an Arab resident was injured after their boat was struck by shrapnel resulting from military operations in the region, according to an official statement issued by Qatar's Ministry of Interior (MOI) on Sunday.

The ministry said the incident came to light during the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security's routine monitoring and verification of maritime vessels. Officials noticed that a vessel carrying two people had failed to return at its scheduled time, prompting immediate concern and the launch of a search operation.

Search Operation Launched After Vessel Failed to Return

Following the vessel's failure to return as expected, maritime patrol teams immediately began search operations on Saturday evening. The operation was carried out by the Maritime Search and Rescue Team of the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security, which worked through the night to locate the missing boat.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the rescue team successfully located the vessel in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, bringing the search operation to an end.

Shrapnel From Military Operations Caused the Casualties

After reaching the vessel, search teams confirmed that the Qatari citizen had died after suffering injuries caused by shrapnel from military operations in the area. The ministry did not disclose the identity of the deceased or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The second person on board, identified as an Arab resident, also sustained injuries in the same incident. Emergency responders transported the injured individual to a hospital for treatment, where he remains in stable condition.

Ministry Expresses Condolences and Confirms Investigation

The Ministry of Interior extended its sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased Qatari citizen. It also wished the injured resident a speedy recovery as he continues to receive medical care.

The ministry confirmed that investigations into the maritime incident will continue in accordance with Qatar's established legal framework. Officials said all necessary legal procedures will be completed as part of the ongoing inquiry into the incident.
