Radhika Apte Raises Alarm on Upsurge of Violence in Indian Cinema

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Radhika Apte has voiced her concerns regarding the alarming increase in graphic violence featured in Indian films and web series, deeming this trend both disturbing and detrimental to society. Taking a brief hiatus from acting following the arrival of her child, she expressed her discomfort with the portrayal of gore and brutality being marketed as entertainment.

Radhika articulated that the prevalence of extreme violence prompts her to reflect on the environment children are being brought up in. She emphasized her worry over how readily audiences are accepting violent imagery and the frequency with which it is deployed purely for attention-grabbing purposes. She believes this shift could have harmful implications not only for viewers but also for the creative landscape of the film industry.

The actress asserted that impactful storytelling does not necessitate explicit visuals or shocking scenes. According to her, if a filmmaker aims to depict a criminal’s narrative, there’s no requirement to showcase gruesome details to convey the essence of the story. Radhika underscored that storytelling ought to be anchored in emotion, significance, and human complexity rather than sensationalism. She urged the industry to contemplate the long-lasting effects that increasing violence might have on societal behavior and impressionable audiences.

Post-pandemic, Radhika believes filmmaking is shifting more heavily toward spectacle, often prioritizing style over substance. Known for her compelling performances in independent films and streaming platforms, she expressed her concern that movies are increasingly favoring brutality over well-developed characters, worthwhile narratives, or meaningful messages.

Radhika not only highlighted her worries about this cultural change but also stressed the significant role filmmakers play in today's context. She asserted that creators must strike a balance between gripping storytelling and responsible filmmaking since the content distributed widely can have a major influence on public attitudes and emotional responses.

While addressing her views on violence in cinema, Radhika also mentioned her upcoming project, Saali Mohabbat. This psychological thriller, helmed by Tisca Chopra, is set to premiere on ZEE5 on December 12, 2025. The film has already garnered significant attention following screenings at renowned film festivals like the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and the Chicago South Asian Film Festival. Radhika's portrayal has been lauded for its emotional depth and intensity, signaling her return in a project that integrates drama, suspense, and strong character-driven narratives.

Radhika's insights come at a critical moment when conversations surrounding film content, violence, censorship, and artistic responsibility are gaining momentum in the Indian entertainment landscape. Her remarks have ignited discussions among filmmakers, audiences, and industry stakeholders, shining a renewed spotlight on the narratives being produced today.
