In a surprising turn of events, Siddhant Awasthi, who led Tesla’s Cybertruck initiative, has announced his resignation after eight years with the company. His departure signifies yet another change within Tesla, which is already grappling with leadership transitions and staff departures.
Awasthi’s ascent at Tesla has been impressive. He joined the firm straight out of university in 2018 following an internship and his involvement in a hyperloop school project. His quick rise through the ranks saw him become an engineering manager within two years, followed by roles related to the Cybertruck’s 48-volt architecture as a senior technical program manager by 2021. By late 2022, he had taken charge of the Cybertruck project, focusing on production scaling and enhancements for future models.
Despite ambitious goals, the Cybertruck has faced commercial hurdles. Tesla planned to build 250,000 units annually, yet only about 25,000 trucks are reportedly selling each year. Analysts suggest that discrepancies between the promises made during the 2019 unveiling and the 2023 production model—with a lower range, fewer features, and increased prices—are significant factors in the sluggish demand.
Last year, Awasthi expanded his responsibilities to also lead the Model 3 program while managing the Cybertruck. In his farewell message, he reflected on his journey with Tesla, noting his contributions to the Model 3 production ramp-up, the Giga Shanghai facility, advancements in electronics, and the unique Cybertruck endeavor, all while under the age of 30.
Tesla’s strategy has largely revolved around nurturing internal talent rather than hiring externally. In the last five years, the automaker has seldom taken on high-level executives from outside, favoring the development of its own staff. Awasthi's career path exemplifies this model, although some industry experts raise concerns that relying heavily on internal promotions might lead to difficulties in executing large-scale projects.
As Awasthi exits, Tesla must contend with overarching challenges around production scalability and fulfilling the lofty expectations it has set for its product lineup. His departure comes amidst a series of organizational shifts following layoffs from the previous year and ongoing changes in personnel across the firm.
