Sheikh Hazza Reviews UAE National Railway Project Progress Updates

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain Region, welcomed a high-level delegation from Etihad Rail, the UAE’s national railway operator. The meeting was led by Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail. Sheikh Hazza was briefed on the overall progress of the UAE National Railway Network, a strategic infrastructure project that aims to revolutionize transportation and logistics across the country.

Freight Rail Services Achievements

The discussion highlighted the successful commencement of freight rail operations, which began in February 2023. Freight services have already improved the movement of goods across the UAE, connecting key industrial and commercial hubs. Sheikh Hazza praised the project’s efficiency and emphasized its role in supporting the nation’s economic growth by enabling faster, safer, and more cost-effective transport of cargo.

Passenger Rail Network Plans

Officials also provided detailed updates on the passenger rail project, which is scheduled to launch in 2026. This network will link Al Ain to other emirates, offering safe, modern, and convenient travel for residents and visitors. Sheikh Hazza noted that the passenger network will enhance regional connectivity, reduce road congestion, and provide a sustainable alternative for daily commuting and tourism, aligning with the UAE’s vision for smart and sustainable urban development.

UAE-Oman Railway Link Development

A major focus of the briefing was the UAE-Oman railway link, a joint initiative to connect the two countries via a shared rail network. The project, which started in 2024, is being developed by Hafeet Rail in partnership with Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala. Sheikh Hazza highlighted that this international link will strengthen trade, boost regional economic integration, and facilitate cross-border transport of goods and passengers, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a transport hub in the Gulf region.

Strategic Importance of Infrastructure Projects

Sheikh Hazza emphasized that large-scale infrastructure projects, especially the UAE National Railway Network, reflect the leadership’s vision for a diversified and sustainable economy. He pointed out that such initiatives open new opportunities for investment, improve supply chain efficiency, and enhance the UAE’s competitiveness in global logistics and transport.

Contribution to Sustainable Development and Trade

The Deputy Ruler’s Representative praised the dedication and efficiency of UAE National teams involved in the railway projects. He explained that the network will not only facilitate smoother trade flows but also support long-term sustainable development. By improving logistics and connecting cities and regions, the rail system is expected to attract local and foreign investments, creating new economic opportunities in line with the UAE’s comprehensive development plans.

Recognition of UAE National Team

Sheikh Hazza highlighted the commitment of the teams working on the railway project, noting that their continuous achievements strengthen the country’s transport and infrastructure system. He emphasized that these efforts ensure high operational standards, timely project delivery, and innovative solutions, all of which contribute to the UAE’s ambition to become a global logistics and transport leader.

Officials Attending the Meeting

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan; Rashed Musabbeh Al Manei, Director-General of Al Ain City Municipality; and senior officials from Al Ain City Municipality, Etihad Rail, and Hafeet Rail. The gathering underscored the strong collaboration between government authorities and private sector partners to ensure the successful implementation of the railway projects.

Sheikh Hazza concluded by reaffirming the UAE leadership’s commitment to expanding the railway network, improving regional connectivity, and supporting the nation’s economic diversification. He stressed that such projects are crucial for building a modern, efficient, and sustainable transport system that benefits society and meets the aspirations of the UAE’s residents for a prosperous future.
