In the year 2025, travel dynamics in India took an unexpected turn. Uttar Pradesh eclipsed renowned destinations like Goa and Gujarat to become the nation’s most frequented state, according to Cleartrip’s Unpacked 2025 report, which analyzed search and booking trends across the country.
The report underscores a significant transformation in Indian travel preferences. Rather than gravitating solely towards beach getaways or luxury retreats, more travelers are embracing spiritual experiences, cultural immersions, and eco-friendly travel. This shift propelled Uttar Pradesh to the forefront of travel destinations.
Interest in travel surged throughout India in 2025, particularly among the Gen Z demographic. This group played a crucial role in driving up bookings as they sought affordable and enriching experiences. Instead of splurging on extravagant holidays, many opted for places rich in cultural and spiritual significance.
Uttar Pradesh emerged as the prime beneficiary of this trend. Cities like Prayagraj and Bareilly experienced a notable increase in accommodation searches, with Prayagraj’s search volume jumping nearly threefold from the previous year and Bareilly seeing a remarkable fourfold rise. These trends solidified Uttar Pradesh’s status as the country’s top travel destination in 2025.
Prayagraj, historically known as Allahabad, continues to attract tourists due to its pivotal religious and historical heritage. The city is celebrated for the Triveni Sangam, a sacred confluence of three rivers, alongside major spiritual events pulling visitors nationwide. Significant landmarks such as the Allahabad Fort, Khusro Bagh, Anand Bhavan, and various temples and parks enrich the city’s appeal.
Bareilly, located in western Uttar Pradesh, has also captured the interest of travelers. The city is renowned for its cultural significance and artisanal crafts, especially cane furniture and zari embroidery. As a key religious site, it hosts important destinations like Nath Nagri and Ala Hazrat, attracting devotees year-round.
The report also identified a growing trend in solo travel across India, with Delhi and Bengaluru leading the charge. Delhi-based travelers showed a preference for nearby locations like Himachal Pradesh, Jaipur, and Agra, while those from Bengaluru opted for scenic hill stations such as Coorg, Ooty, and Kodaikanal.
In summary, 2025 was pivotal as Indians redefined their travel preferences. Spiritual sites, heritage locations, and serene getaways gained unprecedented popularity. Uttar Pradesh’s rise to the forefront illustrates the evolving landscape of travel, where seekers are prioritizing meaningful experiences over mere leisure and luxury.
As travel patterns continue to shift, Uttar Pradesh’s achievement accentuates the increasing relevance of cultural and spiritual tourism in directing India’s travel future.
