Two days before the first ODI in Ranchi, Virat Kohli arrived early for practice. The stadium was empty, but Kohli wanted to get used to the pitch and prepare his mind. Even though he has played over 300 ODIs in 17 years, he treats every match with full focus. Kohli said, “If I am arriving somewhere, I arrive at 120 percent.” His dedication was clear as he practiced hard, showing that his commitment to the game remains strong.
In the opening ODI, Kohli scored 135 runs from 120 balls. This was his 83rd international hundred and 52nd in ODIs, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in a single format. Kohli achieved this milestone in only 294 innings, compared to Tendulkar’s 451. The innings brought excitement back to Ranchi, as fans celebrated his performance and saw the return of his familiar rhythm on the field.
Kohli’s preparation focuses on fitness, mental sharpness, and game awareness. He arrived early in Ranchi to get used to conditions, practiced during the day and evening, and rested a day before the match to recover. Kohli also visualizes the game in his mind, imagining situations and planning his moves. This mental approach allows him to stay confident and calm on the field, even after long gaps without playing international matches.
During his innings, Kohli adapted to a slowing pitch and handled interruptions, including a fan running onto the field. He scored seven sixes and eleven boundaries, helping India post 349 runs and win by 17 runs. He focused on enjoying the game rather than overthinking, letting his experience guide him. Kohli explained that staying mentally sharp and enjoying the game helps him perform consistently.
Kohli does not believe in excessive preparation; he focuses on physical fitness, instinct, and mental readiness. He practices for one to two hours in the nets and ensures he is physically fit. This approach allows him to be prepared for matches, maintain sharp reflexes, and perform at a high level. Former player Dale Steyn highlighted Kohli’s consistent training in London and praised his fitness and mental strength.
Even though Kohli now plays only ODIs, his influence on Indian cricket remains significant. The Ranchi century showed that his competitive spirit, clarity, and methods are still strong. At 37, he continues to shape India’s white-ball cricket and deliver match-winning performances. His experience, preparation, and focus ensure that he remains a central figure in the team for years to come.
