Post by : Meena Hassan

The 2026 New Year Honours list in the UK highlights the achievements of over 1,157 remarkable individuals from various fields including politics, sports, arts, and community service. Recognizing contributions through awards such as Members and Officers of the Order of the British Empire, the list also features esteemed knighthoods and damehoods.

Actor Idris Elba stands out among the honorees with a knighthood for his relentless efforts against knife crime, showcasing his dedication to promoting community safety and earning significant respect for his impactful social advocacy.

The legendary ice dancing duo, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, were also celebrated, with Torvill becoming a dame and Dean receiving knighthood, paying homage to their iconic performance of Bolero at the 1984 Winter Olympics and their lasting influence on British sports.

Sarina Wiegman, the Dutch manager leading the England women’s national soccer team to successive European Championship victories, has been granted an honorary damehood, underlining her commitment to advancing women's soccer in the UK. Many key players from the Lionesses have also received accolades for their significant contributions.

The entertainment sector was not left out, with Cynthia Erivo, known for her role in the upcoming musical film Wicked, receiving an Order of the British Empire. Warwick Davis, recognized for his iconic performances in franchises like Star Wars and Harry Potter and founder of Little People UK, also earned an OBE.

Meera Syal, renowned for her works including Goodness Gracious Me and Anita and Me, was honored with a damehood, celebrating her significant cultural contributions.

In business, Simon Roberts, CEO of Sainsbury's, and John Pettigrew, former head of National Grid, were awarded Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for their exemplary leadership and service.

The New Year Honours, established in 1890, aim to acknowledge not merely high-profile figures but also community champions dedicated to fostering positive change. The investiture ceremonies will occur throughout 2026 at royal venues such as Buckingham Palace.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer commended the list, noting, "It honors the finest among us – those who prioritize the greater good to enhance community well-being and transform lives."
