49 Migrants, Including 30 Indians, Arrested for Driving Trucks Illegally in California

Post by : Meena Hassan

U.S. border agents have detained 49 undocumented immigrants for operating semitrucks unlawfully with commercial driver’s licenses as part of enforcement actions in California. This group includes 30 Indian nationals, who represent the largest contingent among those apprehended.

The operations were executed by border agents in the El Centro area, targeting routine vehicle inspections at immigration checkpoints and coordinated interagency efforts over several weeks. The individuals were intercepted while driving on major highways or trying to cross immigration checkpoints in commercial vehicles.

From November 23 to December 12, authorities arrested 42 undocumented individuals operating semitrucks without legal immigration status, while the rest were apprehended during a significant enforcement operation focusing on commercial trucking.

In addition to Indian nationals, those detained included migrants from countries such as El Salvador, China, Eritrea, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Russia, Somalia, Turkey, Ukraine, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Most of the commercial driver’s licenses used by the arrested individuals were issued in California. Authorities also traced additional licenses to states including Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

In mid-December, a targeted two-day operation was launched to address commercial trucking operations in California, resulting in the arrest of 45 undocumented individuals with commercial licenses. Two drivers were detained on the first day, followed by five on the next day.

The crackdown was prompted by increasing concerns regarding road safety, as several serious accidents involving undocumented truck drivers had been reported in recent months. Instances of deadly crashes linked to these drivers urged authorities to enhance checks within the trucking sector.

Officials emphasized that this operation aimed to enforce immigration laws, improve highway safety, and ensure adherence to commercial transportation regulations. They underscored that individuals without legal status should not be behind the wheel of heavy vehicles that can pose grave risks to public safety.

Authorities have indicated that more similar operations may occur in the upcoming weeks as part of comprehensive efforts to tackle immigration violations and elevate safety standards across U.S. highways.
