Gujarat's Kutch Sees 4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Early Friday

Post by : Meena Hassan

Early on Friday morning, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Gujarat’s Kutch district, causing brief alarm among residents as it shook many areas. The seismic event took place at approximately 4:30 AM, coinciding with the time when most residents were asleep.

The earthquake originated 10 kilometers beneath the surface, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology. Its epicenter was located in the Kachchh region of Gujarat at coordinates 23.65 degrees north latitude and 70.23 degrees east longitude. Given its shallow depth, the tremors were felt across various parts of the district; however, they did not pose a significant threat.

Residents from towns and villages across Kutch reported that doors, windows, and several household items shook momentarily. While some individuals ventured outside for safety, others were roused from sleep due to the tremors. The initial anxiety dissipated swiftly as order returned.

Local officials, along with disaster management teams, quickly assessed the area after the quake. They confirmed that there were no casualties, injuries, or structural damage. Emergency services remained on standby, but ultimately, no rescue efforts were necessary.

Kutch is prone to seismic activity and has experienced significant earthquakes in the past, like the catastrophic Bhuj earthquake in 2001. Thus, even minor quakes are monitored rigorously by authorities and experts. Scientists indicate that these seismic events occur periodically as a result of geothermal movements.

Earlier this April, a similar earthquake of magnitude 4.3 struck Kutch late at night, originating from a depth of approximately 20 kilometers. Like the recent one, it did not lead to serious harm or damage.

Officials reiterated the importance of staying calm during earthquakes and adhering to safety protocols, such as avoiding weak structures and refraining from using lifts. They emphasized the need for readiness in earthquake-prone areas and encouraged reliance on verified information.

Experts continue to monitor the situation, paying close attention to the ongoing seismic activity in the area.
