In the early hours of Friday, a moderate earthquake measuring 5.8 hit the border area between Tajikistan and Xinjiang, according to seismic reports. The quake occurred around 2 a.m. local time at a depth of roughly 159 kilometers, as noted by the Pakistan Meteorological Department. Meanwhile, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre indicated the earthquake's magnitude at 5.3 and a depth of 140 kilometers on the Moment Magnitude scale.
The shockwaves were felt widely, impacting regions in Pakistan including Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as parts of neighboring China and Afghanistan. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the extensive reach of these tremors. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries, casualties, or significant damage from the affected areas.
Officials are diligently monitoring the situation and have established precautionary protocols to ensure public safety. Residents are advised to stay vigilant yet calm, with emergency services standing by to respond as needed.
