6.2 Magnitude Quake Shakes Western Japan with Aftershocks

Post by : Meena Hassan

A significant earthquake reaching 6.2 on the Richter scale hit Japan's Chugoku region on Tuesday, generating strong tremors felt throughout nearby areas, as reported by seismic officials.

The quake's epicentre was identified in eastern Shimane Prefecture, an area prone to seismic activities due to the complex tectonics of the region. Authorities quickly activated emergency response systems as tremors were felt across various prefectures. Fortunately, there was no tsunami threat, providing reassurance to coastal communities and local governments.

The incident occurred near the Shimane Nuclear Power Station, located approximately 32 kilometres from the epicentre. In light of this, power plant operators and nuclear safety authorities launched precautionary inspections, confirming no irregularities or safety issues at the facility.

Particular focus is on the No. 2 reactor at the plant, which resumed operations in December 2024 after being offline since the March 2011 Fukushima disaster. Ongoing safety evaluations and inspections are being conducted to ensure stability post-quake, and preliminary checks indicate all systems are secure.

Japan, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is one of the most seismically active countries, frequently experiencing earthquakes of varying magnitudes. The nation is well-equipped with advanced disaster preparedness and early warning systems.

Local authorities are keeping a close watch on aftershock activities and have urged residents, particularly in older structures, to exercise caution. Emergency services stand ready as public facilities and transport networks undergo thorough inspections.

At present, there are no reports of injuries or significant structural damage. Authorities reiterated that monitoring would persist in the upcoming hours and days to safeguard public safety and ensure swift responses if necessary.
