A devastating 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit southern Mexico, inducing shockwaves throughout the capital and coastal areas, leading to two reported fatalities and considerable damage near the quake’s epicenter.
Seismological authorities confirmed that the tremor happened slightly before 8:00 am local time, with its epicenter located approximately 14 kilometers southwest of San Marcos in Guerrero state. The quake’s intensity was felt nearly 400 kilometers away in Mexico City, triggering emergency alarms that caused thousands to evacuate during the holiday weekend.
In the capital, a 60-year-old man tragically died from injuries sustained while exiting his second-floor apartment. City officials reported at least 12 injuries, yet no significant structural damages were recorded across the metropolitan region.
President Claudia Sheinbaum was conducting her regular morning press briefing when the alarms rang out, prompting prompt evacuation of the presidential palace as a precaution.
The most extensive damage was noted in San Marcos, where many homes were either wrecked or severely damaged. Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado reported that a woman in her fifties perished when her home collapsed during the earthquake. Local officials estimate that about 50 homes endured severe damage, with visible cracks present in nearly every structure in the town.
Witnesses described alarming scenes of destruction, highlighting collapsed walls and deep fractures in their properties. Many residents chose to remain outside for hours, fearing aftershocks.
In Acapulco, a well-known tourist destination, sirens echoed throughout the city as both residents and visitors fled hotels and other buildings in distress. Some tourists were observed rushing into the streets without time to gather their belongings.
Mexico is located at the convergence of five tectonic plates, rendering earthquakes a common risk. Experts explain that earthquakes originating near Guerrero, particularly off the Pacific coast, are often intensely felt in Mexico City due to its soft, lakebed soil that amplifies seismic waves.
Throughout the years, the country has heavily invested in early warning systems, comprising mobile alerts and public loudspeakers, which have once again proven essential in facilitating prompt evacuations and minimizing casualties.
Authorities remain engaged in assessing damage and observing aftershocks, as communities impacted commence recovery efforts.
