A severe earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck off the coast of Davao Oriental in southern Philippines early Wednesday morning, prompting widespread tremors and raising alarms among local residents.
The quake hit at 11:02 a.m. local time, originating from a depth of 42 kilometers, categorizing it as moderately deep. Its epicenter was positioned approximately 47 kilometers off the shore of Many, resulting in vibrations felt across various regions of the island.
Authorities have warned of potential aftershocks and the risk of structural damage, especially in areas near the epicenter. However, initial evaluations by local police and disaster response teams found no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.
Recently, the Philippines has experienced increased seismic activity. On December 22, 2025, a 5.7-magnitude quake affected waters nearby, occurring at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which heightened surface shaking. Previously, in October 2025, a destructive 6.9-magnitude quake devastated the central Philippines, leading to extensive damage, loss of life, and widespread power outages.
That earlier earthquake was centered near BOGO City in Cebu province and struck at a very shallow depth of about five kilometers, amplifying its effects. Initially, a tsunami warning was issued as a precaution but was later rescinded once it was confirmed that hazardous sea waves were not generated.
The Philippines ranks among the world’s most earthquake-prone nations, situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, renowned for its frequent seismic and volcanic activity. This phenomenon occurs due to the relentless movement and collision of major tectonic plates.
The country’s seismic activity is primarily caused by the interactions between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Along its eastern edge, the Philippine Sea Plate is subducted beneath the Philippine Microplate at the Philippine Trench,
whereas on the western frontier, the Eurasian Plate is descending below the islands at the Manila Trench and Negros Trench.
This unique double subduction zone contributes to massive underground pressure, significantly heightening the odds of powerful earthquakes. Experts assert that while Wednesday’s quake was triggered by a local fault, the ongoing stress from converging tectonic plates renders the Philippines particularly susceptible to severe seismic events.
