Austria's New Plan to Limit Social Media Access for Kids Under 14

Austria's New Plan to Limit Social Media Access for Kids Under 14

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Austria’s ruling coalition has announced a significant initiative to bar children under 14 from using social media, aiming to enhance online safety for the youth.

This proposal, revealed on Friday, is set for a draft legislation completion by the end of June, as explained by Alexander Pröll, a senior official in Chancellor Christian Stocker’s digital affairs office. The plan includes the implementation of sophisticated age-verification systems to confirm user ages while ensuring privacy protections.

Despite this, the exact timeline for launching the measure is unclear, pending necessary approval from parliament.

This initiative aligns with a rising global movement aimed at curtailing children’s access to social media. Australia took the lead in 2024, prohibiting social media usage for those under 16, citing hazards surrounding excessive screen time and harmful content. At the same time, Indonesia is poised to implement a similar restriction starting this weekend.

Several European countries are also acting on similar frontiers. France has enacted legislation banning social media use for children under 15, slated to begin this September with the new school year. Meanwhile, Spain and Denmark are either proposing or approving restrictions aimed at young users, while the United Kingdom is contemplating similar actions.

Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler remarked on the importance of this initiative, labeling it a pivotal advancement. He underscored the government’s intention to protect children from the detrimental psychological effects linked to extensive social media use.

“Today marks a positive turn for kids in our nation,” Babler stated, asserting that authorities will address the serious risks of addiction and mental health issues associated with digital platforms.

Beyond the anticipated ban, the Austrian government is dedicated to enhancing digital education within schools. This effort will focus on nurturing responsible media consumption and raising awareness about emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.

This proposal signifies Austria’s dedication to protecting young individuals in a progressively digital landscape while balancing innovation with accountability.
