Zelenskyy Saudi Visit Boosts Drone Defense Ties

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Volodymyr Zelenskyy made an unannounced visit to Saudi Arabia on Thursday, marking a significant step in Ukraine’s growing defense cooperation with Gulf nations amid escalating regional tensions.

The Ukrainian President confirmed his arrival via social media, stating that “important meetings are scheduled,” while emphasizing appreciation for partners willing to collaborate on strengthening regional security.

Ukraine Offers Drone Defense Expertise to Gulf Nations

Zelenskyy recently revealed that Ukraine is actively assisting five countries—Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan—in countering drone threats linked to the ongoing Iran conflict.

Ukraine’s role includes:

  • Sharing advanced drone interception technologies

  • Assisting in building integrated air defense systems

  • Providing battlefield-tested expertise gained from its war with Russia

Ukraine has emerged as a global leader in cost-effective and highly efficient drone interceptors, which have played a crucial role in defending against sustained aerial attacks.

Strategic Exchange: Missiles for Expertise

In return for its support, Ukraine is seeking access to high-end air-defense missile systems possessed by Gulf countries. These systems are critical for Kyiv as it continues to defend against missile strikes from Russia.

Additionally, Ukraine is exploring a potential role in enhancing security in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.

Rising Pressure on Russia’s ‘Shadow Fleet’

Meanwhile, global attention remains on Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” of oil tankers, which are used to bypass international sanctions.

Keir Starmer stated that Russia is leveraging these vessels to profit from rising oil prices amid the Iran conflict. He emphasized stronger action, including allowing military boarding of such tankers in UK waters.

European allies are intensifying efforts to curb these operations, aiming to weaken Russia’s financial capacity to sustain its ongoing war against Ukraine.

Sea Drone Attack Raises Maritime Security Concerns

In a related development, a sanctioned oil tanker near Turkey’s coast was damaged in a suspected sea drone attack. All 27 crew members were safely rescued.

While no official confirmation was given, previous incidents have seen Ukraine deploy naval drones against Russian vessels in strategic waters.
