James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, the highly anticipated third entry in the Avatar series, has made a strong entrance at the global box office, exceeding $500 million globally within a week leading up to Christmas Day. As reported by Variety, the film raked in approximately $544 million worldwide within its first seven days. While this accomplishment is impressive, it doesn’t quite measure up to the success of the 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.
The film's inaugural weekend was particularly strong, amassing an estimated $347 million worldwide, including $88 million from the U.S. and Canada and the remaining $250 million from international markets. This positions Fire and Ash as the top holiday opener of 2025 so far, albeit trailing behind the animated sensation Zootopia 2.
In the days following its weekend debut, the film maintained its momentum, earning an additional $24 million domestically, pushing its total global gross past the $500 million milestone in just one week—an impressive feat amid current cinema challenges.
The film’s success stands out especially with significant competition from other holiday blockbusters like Marty Supreme and Zootopia 2. Moreover, amidst declining cinema attendance due to the rise of streaming services, Fire and Ash’s performance is noteworthy.
For perspective, Avatar: The Way of Water opened to approximately $134 million domestically and amassed around $441 million globally in its initial week. While Fire and Ash has yet to attain those figures, it displays remarkable box office strength as a leading contender in this bustling holiday season.
