Bangladesh Enhances Border Security Following Influx of ARSA Militants from Myanmar

Post by : Meena Hassan

In response to the recent arrival of 53 individuals from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), Bangladesh has heightened its border security with Myanmar amid rising tensions in the area.

Officials confirmed that these militants were taken into custody near Cox’s Bazar, an area already hosting over a million Rohingya refugees. Following the incident, security forces have bolstered their patrols to curb any further illegal entries.

Authorities have reported that at least two individuals suffered injuries caused by violence spilling over from Rakhine state in Myanmar since January 11. One victim, a 12-year-old girl, was shot, underscoring the growing dangers for civilians near the border.

According to Border Guard Bangladesh, one detained militant required hospitalization, while the others are in police custody pending legal action.

Local accounts indicate that the militants were apprehended shortly after crossing the border, prompting immediate action from law enforcement. There has been an increase in surveillance and troop deployment in nearby areas.

ARSA, a militant organization arising from the oppression faced by Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, has been engaged in violent confrontations with rival groups, including the Arakan Army. Bangladeshi officials report ongoing heavy fighting along the border involving both ground and aerial assaults.

A senior security official characterized the conflict as a tripartite struggle, with ARSA and the Arakan Army in combat while Myanmar’s military conducts air operations in the region.

Borderside villages in Bangladesh remain on edge, as residents restrict movement and take safety precautions amid fears of stray bullets or shelling. Smoke from across the border has been visibly noted.

The Bangladeshi government has pledged that law enforcement remains fully engaged to monitor developments and thwart any security threats arising from the ongoing unrest in Myanmar.
