Ben Sasse Reveals Battle with Terminal Pancreatic Cancer

Post by : Meena Hassan

Ben Sasse, the former U.S. senator for Nebraska from 2015-2023, has announced that he has been diagnosed with stage-four metastatic pancreatic cancer. In a poignant social media post, Sasse described the diagnosis as a "death sentence" but expressed unwavering determination, stating he is committed to battling the illness.

At the age of 53, Sasse is recognized for his principled stance on various issues. During his time in the Senate, he was one of only seven Republicans to vote for the impeachment of former President Donald Trump following the events of January 6th. He has often emphasized the importance of Congress maintaining its integrity and ensuring accountability within the executive branch, reflecting his conviction that “some lines cannot be crossed.”

Beyond politics, Sasse, a Harvard and Yale graduate, transitioned to academia as the president of the University of Florida after his Senate career. He resigned from this role in July 2024 to provide care for his wife, who recently experienced a stroke. They are parents to three children.

Sasse made his cancer diagnosis public during the Advent season, when many Christians prepare spiritually for Christmas. In sharing his journey, he expressed hope and tenacity, proclaiming, “I’m not going down without a fight.”

In addition to health challenges, Sasse has been under scrutiny regarding his financial decisions during his tenure as university president. A report by the Florida Auditor General indicated potential misuse of university funds, an allegation Sasse has firmly refuted.

As he faces this grave illness, Sasse’s message underscores his faith and resilience. His candidness about his diagnosis has garnered significant public attention and support.
