Bolsonaro Discharged Post-Surgery, Returns to Custody

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was released from DF Star Hospital in Brasilia on Thursday, a week following a successful double hernia operation. After minor medical procedures necessary for his recovery, he was taken back to the federal police headquarters, where he is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence.

The surgery, sanctioned by Brazil’s Supreme Court, proceeded without any issues. However, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who convicted Bolsonaro, declined his request for house arrest, mandating his immediate return to prison post-hospitalization.

Since his stubbing incident during a 2018 campaign rally, Bolsonaro, who served from 2019-2022, has undergone numerous medical treatments. His confinement conditions in the federal police facility include a private 12-square-meter room with essential amenities such as a bed, a private bathroom, air conditioning, a television, and a desk, while having no contact with other inmates.

In December, he sparked political controversy by endorsing his eldest son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, as his party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming elections against the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

While neither Flávio Bolsonaro nor former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro commented on his return to prison, Michelle expressed her support on social media, stating, “There is a Brazil of good people who love you and pray for you. We will overcome the difficult times.”

Bolsonaro, along with some allies, faced convictions in September for attempting to undermine Brazil’s democratic system after his 2022 electoral defeat. The charges include leading an armed criminal organization and conspiring against President Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Justice Moraes. Bolsonaro has steadfastly denied all allegations.
