A tragic shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney has left 15 people dead, including one of the attackers, according to New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon. Police have confirmed that the suspects involved in the deadly attack were a father-son duo, aged 50 and 24. The 50-year-old father was killed during the incident, while the 24-year-old son survived but sustained critical injuries and is now in stable condition. Authorities have emphasized that no third gunman is being sought, as only the two men were involved in this organized and targeted attack.
Investigations revealed that the father held a valid firearm license for over ten years and owned at least six registered firearms. Police added that there is currently no indication that the attack was pre-planned, though the investigation is still at an early stage. Officials continue to examine how the suspects carried out the attack and whether there were any warning signs prior to the incident. The father and son reportedly acted together to carry out the shooting, which caused widespread panic and fear among beachgoers and the local community.
So far, at least five victims have been identified, including Rabbi Eli Schlanger, Dan Elkayam, Alexander Kleytman, Rabbi Yaakov Levitan, and Reuven Morrison. The death toll initially reported as 12 has now risen to 16 following the deaths of several individuals who succumbed to their injuries overnight, including a child. The incident has sent shockwaves across Australia and raised urgent questions about public safety and gun control measures.
Police reports stated that the attackers targeted civilians on the beach in a violent spree, resulting in chaos and fear. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, providing medical aid and securing the area. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant while the investigation continues and assured that all possible measures are being taken to prevent further incidents.
The father-son perpetrators reportedly planned and executed the crime in a short time, taking advantage of firearms and quick access to the crowded beach. The police are working with forensic teams and witnesses to reconstruct the events and determine if there were any accomplices or prior warning signs. Australian officials have condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for justice for victims and stricter monitoring of licensed firearm holders.
This tragedy has highlighted challenges in public security and the importance of rapid emergency response. The NSW police continue their investigation and are expected to release additional details as more evidence is gathered. The community and authorities are mourning the victims while focusing on ensuring safety across public spaces in Sydney and Australia at large.
