Bondi Beach Shooting: Lone Attackers Not Tied to Terror Networks

Post by : Meena Hassan

Authorities in Australia have determined that the individuals behind the tragic Bondi Beach shooting acted independently, lacking ties to any larger terrorist organization. This incident, which resulted in 15 fatalities, marks Australia’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996.

The suspects, identified as Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, traveled to the Philippines starting November 1, landing initially in Manila and quickly proceeding to Davao City. They remained there until their return to Sydney on November 29. Investigations indicate no evidence of them receiving any terrorist training or support during their stay, with most of their time spent in their hotel.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett shared updates on the investigation, noting that Australian authorities have received CCTV footage from the Philippines. Early assessments suggest both individuals acted alone with no links to a broader terrorist network. Although the motives for their trip to the Philippines are unclear and not related to tourism, further details remain undisclosed.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on the situation, indicating the attackers may have been inspired by Islamic State ideology. During the assault on a Hanukkah event, police fatally shot Sajid Akram. Naveed Akram, who was injured, remains hospitalized and has been charged with numerous offenses, including 15 counts of murder, and will go to court in April.

The Philippine immigration office reported that Sajid used an Indian passport while Naveed entered with an Australian passport. Both noted Davao as their intended final stop before heading back to Australia. Davao, located in Mindanao, is known for having areas with active militant groups, but there’s no evidence connecting the Akram family to such organizations.

The ongoing investigation remains active with authorities prepared for the potential emergence of new evidence. Police are committed to uncovering all details of the incident to ensure justice and maintain public safety.
