The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2026 is currently facing significant upheaval due to a prominent boycott by senior players, leading to the removal of a high-ranking member of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Following the players' refusal to participate in matches, a revised schedule has been announced to address the situation.
Key matches, originally slated for January 15, will now occur on January 16. Additionally, fixtures for January 16 and 17 have been rescheduled to January 17 and 18, respectively. Meanwhile, the Eliminator and Qualifier 1 matches, initially set for January 19, will now be held on January 20. The BCB asserted that these adjustments are essential to uphold the tournament's continuity.
The conflict started when Nazmul Islam, Finance Committee Chairman and Board Director, made contentious remarks about former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal, labeling him an “Indian agent” after Iqbal called for discussions with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the T20 World Cup 2026 venue. This sparked backlash within the cricket community.
Prominent players like Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz galvanized support through the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) and led the boycott. This action resulted in teams not appearing for the toss on Thursday, prompting urgent intervention by the BCB.
In light of the situation, the BCB held a high-level meeting and subsequently relieved Nazmul Islam of his duties. The board emphasized that this decision was necessary for maintaining operational integrity and the dignity of all players.
Despite Nazmul's resignation, player sentiment remains tense as they continue to seek a formal public apology and his complete removal from all positions within the board. The upcoming BPL matches are under close observation as the league strives to regain stability amidst ongoing unrest.
