The memorial service for Brigitte Bardot is confirmed for January 7 at 10:00 GMT, taking place at the Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption church in Saint-Tropez, according to local officials. While the burial will be conducted privately, a public tribute is planned to celebrate the life of the iconic actress and advocate for animal rights. This event will occur at the Pré des Pêcheurs in La Ponche, the historical heart of the old town where Bardot spent many of her years.
Bardot, a symbol of French cinema in the 1950s and 60s, found peace in Saint-Tropez, a scenic town on the French Riviera. Over the years, she championed animal welfare, living in harmony with numerous pets including dogs, cats, and horses. Her dedication to animal protection became a notable part of her legacy, respected beyond the realms of showbiz.
Local residents cherish warm memories of Bardot. Philippe Volmier, who has known her for three decades, reminisced about her generosity and kindness. He recalled her walking her dogs along the beach and even rescuing her when she stumbled into the water with one of her pets. Volmier described Bardot as a “wonderful” person and a compassionate neighbor who positively affected the community.
The significance of Bardot's life is also recognized by prominent figures in the government. French President Emmanuel Macron honored her legacy, declaring her a representation of “a life of freedom” and referring to her as “a legend of the century.” Macron highlighted Bardot’s global influence and her ability to inspire countless individuals across various cultures and generations.
In recent times, Bardot maintained a low profile, living quietly behind tall walls in Saint-Tropez while surrounded by her cherished animals. In a 2024 interview with Paris Match, she expressed her desire to be laid to rest in her garden, showcasing her profound bond with her home and nature. Nevertheless, local authorities from the Var Prefecture noted that no formal request for a private burial had been submitted.
The upcoming public tribute in La Ponche will provide an opportunity for both locals and admirers worldwide to honor Bardot’s remarkable life. It serves as a moment to recognize not just her contributions to cinema and French culture, but also her relentless fight for animal rights. As Saint-Tropez and the nation prepare to bid farewell, Bardot’s lasting spirit and legacy will remain integral to France’s history.
