Venezuela’s President Maduro Held in Notorious Brooklyn Jail

Post by : Meena Hassan

Currently, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is incarcerated at one of the most infamous prisons in the United States: the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Brooklyn.

Established in the early 1990s, MDC Brooklyn typically holds about 1,300 inmates and serves as a primary stop for individuals awaiting trial in New York’s federal courts, with charges ranging from drug offenses to financial crimes.

Following Maduro's arrest, an enthusiastic crowd of Venezuelan expatriates gathered outside the facility, celebrating as a law enforcement convoy believed to be transporting Maduro and his wife arrived late Saturday night.

This jail has a history of housing high-profile inmates, including singers R. Kelly and Sean “Diddy” Combs, crypto magnate Sam Bankman-Fried, and Ghislaine Maxwell, linked to Jeffrey Epstein.

Maduro is not the first global leader to find himself in this detention center; Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras, has also faced similar circumstances there, resulting in a lengthy prison sentence and a subsequent pardon from former US President Donald Trump.

Despite its proximity to a shopping center and view of the Statue of Liberty, MDC Brooklyn has developed a grim reputation. Lawyers and inmates have reported issues related to violence, neglect, and hazardous conditions. In 2024, the facility recorded two inmate fatalities, and several staff members faced corruption charges.

The jail's dark history includes a notorious power outage in 2019, leaving detainees without heat or light for nearly a week during the winter.

In light of ongoing criticism, the Federal Bureau of Prisons claims conditions have improved. They assert that enhancements have been made to staffing, infrastructure, and inmate numbers, resulting in reduced levels of crime and contraband.

Nevertheless, concerns persist.

During his stay, Maduro may encounter notable figures, including Hugo Carvajal, a former intelligence chief from Venezuela now cooperating with U.S. authorities. There are also alleged members of Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang, known for violent activities across the U.S.

The facility has been under increased scrutiny since 2021, following the closure of another New York jail after Jeffrey Epstein's death, which raised significant safety and governance concerns within the federal prison system.
