President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. officially opened the Camalaniugan Bridge in Cagayan province on January 8, 2026, marking a significant advancement for connectivity and economic growth in Northern Luzon.
The bridge spans 1.4 kilometers across the Cagayan River, linking Camalaniugan to Buguey, which greatly decreases travel times and creates essential trade routes previously hindered by ferries and flooding.
With a price tag of ₱2.3 billion ($38.9 million), this project serves as a model for future infrastructure developments in the country. Marcos commended the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for timely completion, overcoming challenging geological and weather conditions.
Equipped with modern safety features, including earthquake-resistant supports and spacious lanes, the bridge is engineered for smooth traffic flow and to endure the typhoons that annually affect the region.
The President underscored the bridge’s potential to revolutionize the local economy, projecting job creation, new enterprises, and expedited transport of agricultural products to markets.
He reassured the community that the economic impact would be swift, with the bridge integral to local agricultural and tourism initiatives, complementing enhancements on the MacArthur Highway and plans for food security in Cagayan Valley.
Local leaders hailed the bridge as a "lifeline," with Governor Manuel Mamba forecasting a possible doubling of the province’s GDP by reducing logistics expenses by 30 to 40 percent.
Construction commenced in 2021, funded by the national government, with the Chinese Hunan Road and Bridge Construction Group and the Philippine firm Agafer Construction and Trading at the helm of the project.
Situated approximately 574 kilometers north of Manila, the bridge was initially set to open by late 2024 but completed ahead of schedule, serving as a crucial infrastructure element for Northern Luzon’s development.
Plans from DPWH include the construction of 13 additional bridges throughout Luzon by 2028, all adhering to international standards to further improve regional connectivity.
