Cambodia has successfully returned soldiers who were detained by Thailand, marking a significant effort to reduce tensions following weeks of violent clashes along their border. The transfer occurred at a specified border point at approximately 10 am local time on Wednesday, with the soldiers having spent a total of 155 days in custody, as reported by Cambodia's Defence Ministry.
This handover coincides with the implementation of a ceasefire agreement which began at noon on Saturday, effectively concluding nearly 20 days of intense conflict. The violence during this period resulted in at least 101 fatalities and displaced more than half a million individuals from both nations. This escalation was noted as one of the gravest in recent times, characterized by aerial strikes, rocket exchanges, and heavy artillery fire.
Originally, the return of the soldiers was set for Tuesday, but Thailand postponed it, citing alleged violations of the ceasefire terms. Cambodian officials have strongly denied these claims, asserting their dedication to the ceasefire's terms and a commitment to restoring peace.
Thailand's Foreign Ministry stated that the detained soldiers were treated in alignment with international humanitarian standards throughout their detention period.
This renewed violence follows the collapse of a previous ceasefire reached in July, which had been facilitated through diplomatic channels involving US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, aimed at curtailing further escalation between the two countries.
With the soldiers returned and a ceasefire effective, observers in the region, alongside international allies, are keenly observing the developments to ensure stability prevails in the area. Many are optimistic that these recent actions might lead to fruitful discussions and enduring peace along the contested border.
