Concerns Grow Over Minority Violence in Bangladesh, Says Canadian MP

Post by : Meena Hassan

A Canadian representative has expressed serious concerns regarding the increasing violence and chaos in Bangladesh under Muhammad Yunus's interim administration. The country is currently experiencing a troubling surge in assaults targeting minority communities, particularly Hindus, almost a year after the political shift that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Shuvaloy Majumdar, a Canadian MP committed to human rights, labeled the recent incidents of mob violence as alarming and profoundly unsettling. He cited the shocking lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, an event that has ignited widespread outrage, particularly since the victim's family learned of his demise through social media rather than formal notifications, showcasing a stark failure on the part of the government.

Majumdar argued that these violent occurrences are symptomatic of a broader trend aimed at minorities and political opponents since the political upheaval. Rather than witnessing a decline in tensions, aggression and violence appear to be escalating, leading to abhorrent occurrences like public lynchings.

The MP questioned the efficacy of the interim government's leadership and its ability to maintain order, calling for transparency and accountability. He cautioned that conducting free and fair elections in this turbulent atmosphere—especially with significant political groups being prohibited—poses a serious challenge.

He also drew connections between the ongoing crisis and historical grievances from the 1971 liberation war, indicating that lingering extremist ideologies continue to plague Bangladesh's institutions. Moreover, he voiced apprehensions regarding mounting assaults on journalists and progressive voices, indicating a disturbing rise in religious extremism that threatens the nation's secular principles.

Majumdar urged the global community to take decisive action and tackle the underlying causes of this violence to ensure the safety and rights of all citizens, irrespective of their religious affiliation.
