On Saturday, Thailand and Cambodia marked a pivotal moment by signing a ceasefire agreement that concludes weeks of armed conflict at their disputed border. Effective immediately at noon local time, the accord mandates a complete cessation of military activity and respects each other’s airspace, initiating a pathway toward regional stability.
This ceasefire is particularly notable as only Thailand had conducted airstrikes during the recent hostilities, with strikes on Cambodian territories continuing till the morning of the agreement. A crucial aspect of the ceasefire is Thailand’s commitment to release 18 Cambodian soldiers that have been imprisoned since clashes began in July. This has been a critical demand from Cambodia and their release is set to follow a 72-hour verification period of the ceasefire.
Signed by Cambodia’s Defense Minister Tea Seiha and Thailand’s Defense Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit at a border checkpoint, the agreement comes after three days of military discussions under the General Border Committee framework.
The new ceasefire reinforces earlier commitments made in July to a previously brokered truce, which concluded a five-day conflict and included 16 additional measures aimed at preventing future skirmishes.
Although there was a prior ceasefire, tensions remained elevated, with ongoing propaganda and minor incidents escalating into severe confrontations in early December. The violence has claimed many lives, with Thailand reporting 26 military and one civilian deaths, while Cambodia counts 30 civilian casualties and around 90 injuries. Both nations accuse one another of provocation, each asserting claims of self-defense.
The agreement further outlines initiatives to prevent land mine deployment, a long-standing issue for Thailand due to injuries from newly planted mines by Cambodia, which Cambodia insists are leftover from historical conflicts.
Moreover, both nations have pledged to cease the dissemination of misinformation and to resume efforts to clarify their border demarcation. They also agreed to collaborate in tackling transnational crimes, particularly online scams that have victimized people globally, with Cambodia frequently identified as a hub for such illicit activities.
This ceasefire brings forth hope for enduring peace and collaboration between Thailand and Cambodia after a series of turbulent conflicts.
