Cebu City Landfill Tragedy Claims 11 Lives, Rescue Efforts Underway

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a devastating event in Cebu City, Philippines, at least 11 individuals have tragically died due to a significant landfill collapse. The incident took place last week at the Binaliw landfill, where over 100 workers were on-site during the collapse.

So far, rescue teams have successfully retrieved 12 injured workers from the rubble, but officials indicate that more than 20 people remain unaccounted for, leaving families anxious for news.

Despite previous worries about diminishing survival chances after days buried under waste, rescuers detected signs of life during their operations on Monday. Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival emphasized that the focus remains on rescue efforts, not on recovery.

This disaster has prompted urgent calls for accountability. Environmental regulators have instructed Prime Integrated Waste Solutions, Inc., the landfill's operator, to halt activities immediately and provide a corrective action plan within 90 days.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is conducting a thorough investigation into the collapse, promising that those responsible will be held accountable. Lawmakers are advocating for a comprehensive review of waste management protocols and the conditions under which landfill workers operate.

Residents near the landfill shared harrowing accounts of the incident. One individual recounted the frightening moment the garbage seemingly exploded, leading to panic as workers attempted to flee. Tragically, his wife’s body was discovered the next day.

The Binaliw landfill spans approximately 20 hectares, with around three hectares actively utilized for waste disposal. While the precise cause of the collapse is still being investigated, initial reports indicate that prolonged rainfall contributed to the weight and instability of the refuse, potentially compounded by engineering concerns.

Landfills are commonly used as a waste management strategy in major cities across the Philippines, including Cebu, a significant economic and transportation center in the Visayas region. This tragic event has reignited discussions about persistent safety issues and the urgent requirement for enhanced regulations to avert similar incidents in the future.
