China Targets 20 US Defense Firms Amid Taiwan Arms Sales Dispute

China Targets 20 US Defense Firms Amid Taiwan Arms Sales Dispute

Post by : Meena Hassan

On Friday, China declared sanctions against 20 American defense firms and 10 executives in retaliation for the recent US approval of a significant arms deal to Taiwan. Beijing has criticized the US action, asserting it breaches the “one-China principle” and the foundational agreements between the two nations.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry indicated that these sanctions align with China’s Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law and will take effect without delay. It warned that any entities engaging in arms transactions with Taiwan would encounter severe repercussions. China perceives these transactions as meddling in its domestic affairs and a threat to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The companies under sanctions include Northrop Grumman, L3Harris Maritime Services, Boeing (St. Louis), Gibbs & Cox, Advanced Acoustic Concepts, VSE Corporation, Sierra Technical Services, among others. All assets belonging to these firms within China will be frozen. Additionally, Chinese organizations and individuals are barred from any engagement with the listed companies.

The sanctions also impact 10 senior executives, including Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril Industries, as well as key officials from L3Harris and VSE Corporation. These individuals will experience asset limitations and restrictions on activities related to China.

This strong response is prompted by the US government’s authorization of an arms package for Taiwan valued at over $11 billion, which encompasses medium-range missiles, howitzers, drones, HIMARS rocket systems, anti-tank missiles, and other advanced weaponry. Taiwan is expected to integrate five of these arms provisions into a specialized defense budget totaling around $39.85 billion, pending approval by its legislature.

China firmly states that no country or individual should underestimate its resolve and capability to defend its national sovereignty. The Chinese government has vowed to act decisively against any provocations regarding Taiwan.
