China has launched extensive military maneuvers surrounding Taiwan, concentrating on simulating control and blockade of vital sites on the island. The drills, incorporating ground forces, navy, air force, and missile units, feature live-fire exercises and are under the banner of "Justice Mission 2025."
These actions follow the U.S. announcement of an $11 billion arms sale to Taiwan, provoking strong criticism from Beijing, which subsequently imposed sanctions on American defense firms.
Taiwan's government has vehemently denounced these upcoming exercises as a breach of international norms. Taiwan’s defense officials reported Chinese aircraft and naval ships in close proximity to its waters early Monday, prompting the mobilization of Taiwan’s own military forces and missile defense systems. Taiwan remains on high alert, stressing readiness to safeguard the island and its citizens.
The Chinese Eastern Theater Command, overseeing the Taiwan Strait, referred to the drills as a “shield of justice” aimed at countering any movements advocating for Taiwan's independence. China asserts Taiwan is part of its territory and maintains legal authority to use force to avert the island’s secession, despite officially promoting peaceful reunification.
Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, often labeled by Beijing as an independence proponent, asserts that Taiwan is already a sovereign entity and does not require a formal independence declaration. In recent discussions, Lai highlighted the need to bolster Taiwan’s defense mechanisms to deter potential invasions, while affirming the commitment to maintain the current status quo without provocation.
Public sentiment in Taiwan consistently reflects a majority preference for sustaining the status quo, avoiding both unification with China and formal independence.
These drills mark the first significant exercises under the command of Yang Zhibin, who took the helm of the Eastern Theater Command in October. Since 2022, China has intensified its military presence around Taiwan, often reacting to perceived threats like foreign officials' visits or significant political developments in Taiwan.
Taiwan regularly conducts military drills to prime its populace and showcase its defensive capabilities, with this year's Han Kuang exercises being the longest and largest recorded. The island is also focusing on enhancing new defense technologies, including a cutting-edge dome-shaped air defense system.
Increasing military tensions around Taiwan are also impacting regional diplomacy, particularly with Japan. Ties between China and Japan have deteriorated lately, following comments from Japanese leaders suggesting that Japan's Self-Defense Forces might step in if China were to attack Taiwan, leading to diplomatic protests and heightened military engagements between the two countries.
