China Voices Strong Opposition to US Pressure on Venezuela Amid Deepening Oil Relations

Post by : Meena Hassan

China has taken a firm stance against the escalating military and economic pressure exerted by the United States on Venezuela. As US tanker interceptions increase, alongside a bolstered military presence in the Caribbean under President Trump’s stringent strategy, Beijing expresses grave concern.

Venezuela is crucial to China as an energy ally in Latin America, with analyses indicating that approximately 80% of Venezuelan crude shipped lately has been directed to China. The US’s interventions against ships linked to Venezuelan oil exports threaten these critical supply lines and jeopardize Chinese economic interests.

The Chinese government has denounced the US actions as a “serious violation of international law,” cautioning against unilateral coercion and political intimidation. In a recent diplomatic dialogue, China reiterated its backing of Venezuela’s sovereignty and condemned attempts at external intervention for regime change.

Moreover, Chinese officials and analysts perceive a broader strategic advantage amid these challenges. In China, the perception is growing that the US is revealing its diminishing global leadership and reverting to outdated power dynamics—particularly evident in Trump’s renewed endorsement of the Monroe Doctrine.

Earlier this month, the White House unveiled a revised national security strategy aimed at reinforcing US dominance in the Western Hemisphere, prioritizing the prevention of “hostile foreign ownership” of key assets. Although this doctrine historically targeted European colonial powers, China believes it is now implicitly in the crosshairs.

This transformation has ignited vigorous discussions in China regarding the US's potential inward focus and its implications for US influence. According to some analysts, this potential pivot could open up more space for Beijing's expansion into Asia, Africa, and the Global South.

In response, China has quickly advanced its counter-message. Days following the announcement of America's strategy, Beijing released its first revised policy paper on Latin America and the Caribbean in nearly ten years, emphasizing commitments to enhance cooperation in infrastructure, technology, aerospace, and law enforcement. The signal was unmistakable: China is not stepping back from a region where it has made significant investments—Venezuela remains central to these plans.

Chinese state media have amplified warnings, stating that ongoing US aggression may evolve into prolonged conflict, with some analysts likening it to a possible “second Vietnam War” if military actions escalate to direct intervention.

While deploying military support for Venezuela is unlikely, China's diplomatic position reflects broader strategic assessments. Venezuelan oil constituted roughly 5% of China's total crude imports last month. The link to a Hong Kong-registered firm in at least one of the intercepted tankers illustrates Beijing's tangible stakes.

Chinese analysts are also scrutinizing how the US’s focus on the hemisphere might influence its actions in East Asia, especially concerning Taiwan. Some Chinese scholars propose that this strategy indicates a world divided by competing influences, while others warn that any US retrenchment may be short-lived.

Currently, China views Trump's Venezuela policy as a potent rhetorical tool—one that allows it to characterize the US as an assertive, outdated entity, effectively diverting attention from its own activities in the South China Sea and elsewhere.

With tensions mounting, Venezuela serves not just as a regional flashpoint but as a pivotal arena for contending global power dynamics, influence, and narrative control amid a rapidly evolving world order.
