The daughter of Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai has made a heartfelt appeal regarding her father’s deteriorating health, expressing alarm at how years behind bars have taken a severe toll on him.
At 78 years old, Lai has been incarcerated since December 2020, facing a potential life sentence after being convicted under the contentious national security law in Hong Kong. Claire Lai, who now resides in London, fears she might not see her father again outside the prison environment.
Claire previously noted her father’s strength before his detention; however, she reports alarming health declines during his imprisonment. She states that Lai has lost substantial weight and has encountered significant health issues, such as diabetes and heart conditions.
According to her statements, his health has deteriorated alarmingly. His nails have taken on a purplish-grey hue and have even fallen off, he experiences tooth decay, and is frequently troubled by severe back and waist pain. On certain days, she mentioned he is unable to stand or get out of bed without suffering considerable discomfort.
The family has continuously voiced their concerns about his health, warning that his condition is increasingly fragile. They have implored officials to take into account his age and medical needs, emphasizing that prolonged incarceration could endanger his life. In response, authorities in Hong Kong and China assert he is being treated lawfully and is in good health.
Jimmy Lai, a British citizen and the founder of the now-defunct pro-democracy publication Apple Daily, is the most high-profile figure charged under the national security law enacted in 2020 amid extensive pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Detractors argue that the law has stifled dissent and compromised press freedom, while Beijing argues it is essential for maintaining order and stability.
The UK government has condemned Lai’s conviction as politically driven and a blatant violation of free speech. British officials are calling for the repeal of the national security law and an end to the prosecutions that stem from it. Lai’s family is now urging UK leaders to advocate for his case on a diplomatic level, hoping that international pressure could facilitate his release before his health worsens further.
