Delhi Police Detain Over 660 in Pre-New Year Security Operation

As New Year’s Eve draws near, Delhi Police have initiated a significant security operation in South and South East Delhi, resulting in the detention of over 660 individuals during a night-long crackdown designed to mitigate crime over the holiday season.

This coordinated effort, known as Operation Aaghat 3.0, involved thorough searches in identified high-risk areas within a 24-hour period. Law enforcement specifically targeted repeat offenders, drug dealers, bootleggers, and gamblers to create a secure environment for local residents.

Reports indicate that 285 arrests were made in the South East district alone, with the overall operation leading to the detention of more than 850 individuals across both targeted districts. Senior police officials deemed the operation a "very successful drive," noting that over 2,800 people were interrogated during this extensive effort.

During the raids, police confiscated a considerable assortment of illegal items, including 24 country-made firearms and 44 knives, underscoring the initiative's focus on weapons-related crimes. Additionally, more than 22,500 quarters of unauthorized liquor were seized, along with over 60 arrests linked to these violations.

The operation further led to the capture of 10 individuals for possessing about 10 kilograms of ganja (cannabis) as part of their stringent anti-drug measures. Gambling activities were disrupted, resulting in the arrest of 68 gamblers and the recovery of Rs 2.3 lakh in cash.

Vehicle theft prevention was another priority, with five suspected auto-lifters apprehended. A total of 231 two-wheelers and one four-wheeler were also seized during the operation, aimed at reducing vehicle thefts during the holiday rush.

This operation put a strong spotlight on organized crime and habitual offenders. About 155 known “bad characters” were identified and taken into custody to disrupt ongoing criminal behavior. Furthermore, 10 property offenders were detained, emphasizing the extensive nature of this crackdown.

According to senior officials, the campaign sends a firm warning to criminals and disrupts street crime, ensuring strict law enforcement to uphold public safety during festive periods.

In total, 66 cases were filed under the Arms Act about illegal weapon possession, with a corresponding number of arrests made. Numerous cases were also initiated under the Excise Act for illicit liquor, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for drug offenses, and the Gambling Act for illegal betting.

Over 350 individuals were apprehended for consuming alcohol in public spaces, which is prohibited by local regulations, reinforcing a commitment to maintaining safety and order in public areas.

A notable achievement was the discovery and recovery of approximately 350 stolen or missing mobile phones during the operation. Police are now working on returning these devices to their rightful owners, providing relief to victims of theft.

Authorities have assured the public that this initiative will persist in the days to come to ensure a safe environment during New Year celebrations. Citizens are encouraged to work alongside law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activities to help foster peace in the capital.

This extensive crackdown highlights the unwavering commitment of Delhi Police to countering criminal activity and maintaining a tranquil atmosphere for all residents and visitors during the festive season.
