Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has announced the launch of the fifth Transactions Report from DEWA’s Research and Development (R&D) Centre. This report highlights substantial achievements, featuring 71 new research papers indexed in Scopus, which elevates the total to 346 papers presented at various international conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
The research encompasses various advanced sectors such as solar technologies, smart grid innovations, Fourth Industrial Revolution breakthroughs, advanced materials, and energy systems. Additionally, the R&D Centre has marked a key milestone by securing 64 patents, with 18 already granted and the rest pending review. The team at the centre comprises 44 professionals, including nine Ph.D. holders and nineteen individuals with Master’s degrees.
Al Tayer underlined the pivotal role played by DEWA’s R&D Centre in establishing Dubai as a global center for scientific innovation and a knowledge-driven economy. “Our objective is to draw in leading researchers globally and utilize scientific advancements for improved sustainable management of water and energy,” he stated. “The centre’s endeavors enhance DEWA’s operational efficiency and bolster Dubai’s standing in the global energy transition.
Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA, noted the significance of collaboration through partnerships with esteemed institutions like the Fraunhofer Society, Stanford University, and the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM). These partnerships contribute to the enrichment of DEWA’s innovation ecosystem and research capabilities.
Topics featured in the recent report include improvements to the resilience of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in harsh desert climates, the development of next-gen PV cells, the use of deep learning for monitoring energy usage, and evaluating HVAC energy standards across the GCC region. Additional innovations include flexibility in grid demand, fault detection via microphase measurement units (μPMUs), automated mapping of underground utilities using robotics and sensors, advancements in 3D printing, discoveries in vanadium redox flow battery technology, and DEWA’s GENOS energy optimization system aimed at enhancing renewable energy resilience.
Through these notable advancements, DEWA’s R&D Centre is committed to fostering technological innovation that backs Dubai’s sustainable development ambitions and propels the global utilization of renewable energy.
