Vast Turnout in Dhaka to Honor Activist Sharif Osman Hadi

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a poignant gathering on Saturday, hundreds of thousands assembled in Dhaka to pay their respects to leading activist Sharif Osman Hadi, whose tragic killing this month has escalated political tensions in Bangladesh leading up to the imminent national elections.

Beginning early in the morning, mourners made their way to Manik Mia Avenue, adjacent to the Parliament. By dawn, the area overflowed with individuals from various backgrounds. Many adorned themselves in the national flag, while others enthusiastically chanted slogans calling for justice regarding Hadi’s death. The mood was both somber and charged with political significance.

Officials instituted rigorous security measures for the funeral held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Scores of law enforcement officers, some equipped with body cameras, patrolled Dhaka, while additional forces, including Border Guard Bangladesh personnel, secured Parliament and other strategic areas. As part of a national day of mourning, flags flew at half-mast across government buildings and private entities.

Hadi’s elder brother, Abu Bakar, officiated the funeral prayers. While access to the burial was restricted, tens of thousands participated in the janaza prayers. Authorities earlier confirmed that the body would not be available for public viewing, limiting the burial attendees to only a select few.

Post-prayers, Hadi’s body was transported under heavy security to Dhaka University. Burial arrangements had been finalized overnight, and he was interred next to the mausoleum of Bangladesh’s national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam. Police reported that the burial proceeded quietly, following security protocols.

Despite the restrictions, the mourners remained vocal, repeating political slogans such as “Dhaka is for Dhaka” and pledging that Hadi’s death would evoke a response. Supporters described him as an emblem of resistance and a pivotal figure in Bangladesh’s recent political movements.

Sharif Osman Hadi acted as a spokesperson for the Inqilab Moncho cultural platform and played a significant role in last year’s political uprising that brought an end to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year tenure. He was shot in Dhaka on December 12 and subsequently transported to Singapore for advanced treatment, succumbing to his injuries earlier this week. His remains were repatriated to Bangladesh late Friday night.

Authorities have indicated that suspects linked to the shooting have been identified and may have fled to India, where Sheikh Hasina has sought refuge. Such claims have strained diplomatic ties, prompting both New Delhi and Dhaka to summon each other’s ambassadors in recent days.

This substantial funeral casting a shadow over Saturday's events occurred amid escalating political uncertainty, as Bangladesh gears up for parliamentary elections set for February 12. The overwhelming public participation emphasized the profound impact of Hadi’s death, highlighting the tense atmosphere enveloping the nation.
