Suspect of Brown University Shooting Found Dead; MIT Professor Linked

Post by : Meena Hassan

Authorities have confirmed that Claudio Neves Valente, the individual implicated in last week’s tragic shooting at Brown University, was discovered deceased in Salem, New Hampshire. Officials suggest that the death was likely caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, concluding a six-day multi-state manhunt.

Valente, originally from Portugal, entered the United States in 2017 via the diversity visa lottery program, which is colloquially referred to as the green card lottery. He later gained permanent residency. Following the shooting incident, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem declared the suspension of the visa lottery program, citing safety concerns and the risks associated with this initiative.

Investigators have also made a connection between Valente and the fatal shooting of Nuno Loureiro, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The 47-year-old professor was shot at his residence in Brookline, Massachusetts, a few days prior to the Brown University attack. Both individuals attended the same university in Portugal in the late 1990s, and law enforcement used CCTV footage and witness accounts to link the two incidents. Surveillance cameras had noted Valente's vehicle near both crime scenes, assisting the investigation.

The shooting at Brown University transpired on December 13 amid final examinations within the engineering building. Two students lost their lives: 19-year-old Ella Cook from Alabama and 18-year-old Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a recent Uzbek-American student. Nine others sustained injuries as the assailant opened fire in a bustling classroom environment. Valente was not enrolled or officially affiliated with Brown University at the time, according to university authorities.

Authorities retrieved two firearms and a bag linked to Valente at the location where he was found dead. Furthermore, investigators gathered evidence from a nearby vehicle that connected to the scene of the Providence shooting. Although they have confirmed his association with both homicides, no motive for either incident has been publicly revealed.

These tragic occurrences at Brown University and the murder of Professor Loureiro have sparked renewed discussions regarding the diversity visa lottery program. This program permits individuals from nations with low immigration rates to apply for a green card through a lottery system. In light of these events, officials stressed the need to evaluate immigration policies, aspiring to balance public safety with lawful immigration processes.
