A train driver was killed and 89 people were injured after two passenger trains collided near Bedford, north of London, on Friday evening.
The crash happened at around 5:15 p.m. when two southbound East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains traveling towards London St. Pancras station collided outside the town of Bedford. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, deploying ambulances, firefighters, police units, a hazardous incident team, and an air ambulance.
Authorities confirmed that one person died in the accident. Eddie Dempsey, General Secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), later identified the victim as a train driver.
According to the East of England Ambulance Service, 11 people suffered very serious injuries, 22 sustained serious injuries, and 56 others received treatment for minor injuries.
Police declared the incident a major emergency and said officers remained at the scene alongside Bedfordshire Police, fire crews, and ambulance teams. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the collision.
Passenger Peter Knapp, who was traveling on the rear train, described the frightening moments after the crash. He said passengers were suddenly thrown forward without warning before smoke appeared inside the train. According to Knapp, many people were crying and screaming, while several passengers suffered injuries including broken bones.

Images and videos shared on social media showed dozens of passengers gathered near the tracks as emergency crews worked at the scene. Some people were seen receiving medical attention while others waited to be transported away from the area.
East Midlands Railway confirmed that the collision involved the 4:40 p.m. service from Corby to London St. Pancras and the 3:50 p.m. service from Nottingham to London St. Pancras.
Following the accident, EMR canceled all train services to and from London St. Pancras for the remainder of Friday. The company said it was unable to confirm Saturday's train schedule while recovery and investigation work continued.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into one of the most serious rail incidents in the region in recent years.
