Driver Caught Napping at 100 km/h on Manali Highway

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A serious road accident was narrowly averted on the Chandigarh–Manali highway when a driver was filmed apparently asleep at the wheel while traveling at nearly 100 km/h.

The alarming footage, which has gained widespread attention on social media, shows a white sedan swerving between lanes while the driver slumps down, completely oblivious to the active road conditions.

Intervention from Fellow Road Users

In the video, a truck driver noticed the drifting sedan and attempted to alert the sleeping driver. He could be heard blaring his horn and shouting, hoping to rouse him. Unfortunately, the driver remained unresponsive for several kilometers, with his head laid back as the vehicle continued at a dangerous speed.

This incident happened on a less-trafficked portion of the highway, which likely helped evade what could have been a disastrous collision.

Commercial Vehicle Raises Concerns

The vehicle bore commercial registration plates, but it remains unclear if the driver was operating as a taxi or for a transport company. Authorities have not yet disclosed how the car was finally brought to a stop.

Experts in road safety emphasize that the footage underlines a significant concern regarding driver fatigue, especially among those in commercial roles who often endure long hours with inadequate breaks.

Drowsy Driving: A Hidden Threat

“Driving while drowsy is akin to driving under the influence,” noted a road safety consultant. “Even a brief moment of sleep on the highway can result in deadly outcomes.”

Demands for Stricter Regulations

Although local law enforcement has yet to release an official statement, the video has sparked a fervent discussion online, with many advocates calling for tougher regulations on rest periods for commercial drivers to avert such potentially life-threatening occurrences.

This viral incident serves as a grave reminder of the immediate necessity for improved monitoring, awareness, and severe enforcement measures to ensure safe travel on highways.
