Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially launched a brand-new metro project called the Dubai Metro Blue Line. This is a big step forward in improving how people travel in the city. The Blue Line will help reduce traffic jams, make traveling easier for everyone, and support Dubai’s goal of becoming a more modern, green, and people-friendly city.
Opening in 2029 – On a Special Day!
The Blue Line is planned to open on September 9, 2029. This date is special because it's the 20th anniversary of the Red Line, which first opened on September 9, 2009. The new Blue Line will be 30 kilometers long and will connect important places where many people live and work. It is expected to serve almost 1 million people once it is fully running.
Who is Building It?
This massive project, which will cost Dh20.5 billion, was given to a group of top companies from Turkey and China. These companies are MAPA, LIMAK, and CRRC. They were chosen through a worldwide competition where 15 expert construction companies showed interest.
A Big Step for Dubai
Mattar Al Tayer, who is the Director General and Chairman of RTA, said that the Blue Line is a very important project for Dubai. He shared that this metro line will help Dubai become one of the best cities to live in. Since it started in 2009, Dubai Metro has already transported nearly 2.5 billion passengers and is a major part of the city's public transport system.
Mr. Al Tayer also explained that the Blue Line supports Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. These are long-term plans to improve life in the city, grow the economy, and protect the environment.
Two Main Routes of the Blue Line
The Blue Line will have two main routes, and both will connect to the current metro lines (Red and Green):
Route 1 (Green Line Connection – 21km, 10 stations)
Starts from Al Khor Station on the Green Line in Al Jaddaf
Passes through: Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour, Ras Al Khor, International City (1, 2 & 3), Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Academic City
Ends at Al Ruwaiyah 3 Depot
Route 2 (Red Line Connection – 9km, 4 stations)
Starts from Centrepoint Station on the Red Line in Al Rashidiya
Passes through: Mirdif, Al Warqaa, and International City (1)
Connects to Route 1 at International City
Mr. Al Tayer said the route was carefully chosen to link the most crowded and fastest-growing areas in Dubai, making travel easier for many people.
Unique Features of the Blue Line
This metro line is not just about getting from one place to another — it will have many special and modern features:
A 1.3-km bridge over Dubai Creek, which is the first bridge like this for the Dubai Metro.
A beautiful and modern station at Dubai Creek Harbour, designed by the famous architectural firm SOM (they also designed the Burj Khalifa).
International City (1) will be the biggest underground interchange station in the metro system. It will be able to handle up to 350,000 passengers per day and cover more than 44,000 square meters.
Helping the City and the Environment
The Blue Line is expected to bring many benefits:
It will cut traffic on main roads by 20%.
It could increase the value of properties near metro stations by up to 25%.
It is expected to bring Dh56.5 billion in economic and environmental benefits by the year 2040.
It will connect directly to Dubai International Airport, cutting travel time to only 10 to 25 minutes between important places.
Also, every station will follow high eco-friendly building standards, making the Blue Line one of the most environmentally friendly metro projects in the region.
More Riders, More Trains
The Blue Line is built to carry 46,000 passengers every hour (both directions), with a train coming every two minutes. By 2030, it is expected to serve 200,000 riders each day, and by 2040, the number could reach 320,000 daily riders.
When it’s completed, Dubai’s total train network, including the metro and tram, will be 131 kilometers long with 78 stations — making it the longest driverless metro system in the world.
A new train depot will also be built in Al Ruwaiyah 3 to help maintain and manage the metro trains.
Two Impressive Stations
Two stations in the Blue Line stand out:
Dubai Creek Harbour Station will cover 10,800 square meters and serve up to 160,000 people each day. It’s being designed by SOM, the same firm behind world-famous buildings.
International City (1) will be the largest underground metro station in the network, with the capacity to handle 350,000 daily riders.
In Summary: Blue Line Fast Facts
Length: 30 kilometers
Underground track: 15.5 km
Elevated track: 14.5 km
Stations: 14 new ones, including 3 that will connect with other metro lines
Completion date: September 9, 2029

The Blue Line is more than just a metro project — it’s a step towards a smarter, greener, and better-connected Dubai, where people can move around easily, safely, and comfortably.
