Tensions in Yemen soared on Thursday following revelations by the Saudi-led coalition that the United Arab Emirates facilitated the escape of Aidarous al-Zubaidi, a prominent separatist leader. Al-Zubaidi leads the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a group backed by the UAE, which has recently navigated through conflicts in southern Yemen. Reports indicate that Saudi-aligned forces are making gains in Aden, a crucial southern city of Yemen.
Coalition sources disclosed that al-Zubaidi initially traveled to Somaliland by boat and subsequently took a flight to Mogadishu, eventually arriving at a military airport in Abu Dhabi. His abrupt exit happened after he opted not to join crucial discussions in Riyadh between Saudi Arabia and the STC focusing on escalated unrest in the south. The STC conveyed that al-Zubaidi had received threats and suggestions to travel to Saudi Arabia, but his move to the UAE further complicates relations among Gulf allies.
This incident sheds light on the growing rift between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, both influential oil states and U.S. allies, although they have had differing views on several regional matters, notably the Yemen conflict. The coalition asserted that UAE personnel oversaw al-Zubaidi's exit, emphasizing the UAE's proactive diplomatic strategy in the region.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Saudi-backed forces are returning to Aden, which had fallen under the control of the STC after the separatists seized it last month, prompting the recognized government to relocate to Saudi Arabia. Although there is no formal assertion of full control, local officials and witnesses have indicated that Saudi-aligned forces are regaining significant territories.
The recent events indicate potential fractures among separatist leadership. A delegation from the STC was reportedly in Riyadh for discussions with the Saudi ambassador to Yemen, pointing to internal disagreements within the faction. Such divisions may complicate stabilization efforts in southern Yemen, which continues to grapple with an extensive humanitarian crisis.
The UAE’s role in aiding al-Zubaidi's escape showcases its strategic positioning across the Middle East and Africa. Although the UAE has withdrawn many of its troops from Yemen, it remains actively engaged in regional dynamics. Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, is focused on countering Houthi presence in the north and ensuring control over the southern regions, particularly near its border.
As developments unfold, the diverging interests between Saudi Arabia and the UAE could lead to significant implications for Yemen and the broader Gulf area. Experts caution that without sustained dialogue, the likelihood of escalating instability and conflict may increase, posing further threats to a nation already ravaged by prolonged warfare.
