An explosion occurred outside the United States Embassy in Oslo early Sunday, prompting an investigation by Norwegian authorities. The incident happened around 1 a.m. local time in Oslo, the capital of Norway, after residents reported hearing a loud blast near the embassy.
According to Oslo police, the explosion was caused by an incendiary device that detonated near the entrance of the embassy’s consular section. The blast caused damage to the entrance area, but officials confirmed that no injuries were reported.
Investigators believe the embassy may have been the intended target of the attack. Police are currently searching for the people responsible and trying to determine the motive behind the incident. Authorities said the investigation is still in its early stages and they are examining several possible scenarios.
A US official said the device was reportedly placed inside a backpack and exploded outside the entrance of the Consular Affairs office. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
Witnesses nearby reported that thick smoke covered the street shortly after the blast. Police have asked anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious around the time of the explosion to come forward with information.
Following the incident, the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) deployed additional personnel to assist with the investigation. However, officials said the country’s terror threat level has not been raised.
Norway’s Minister of Justice and Public Security, Astri Aas-Hansen, described the explosion as an unacceptable incident and said authorities are treating the matter with the utmost seriousness. She also assured the public that there is currently no indication of any wider threat to public safety.
The US State Department confirmed it is aware of the incident and has opened its own investigation. US officials also thanked Norwegian authorities for their cooperation and support.
Police continue to examine the scene and gather evidence as they work to identify those responsible and determine the motive behind the explosion. The investigation remains ongoing.
